Magnets in Room 9

In April, we learned about magnets. First we talked about what we already knew. We knew that some magnets "stick" to other objects and we knew some magnets are blue and red or shaped like a horse shoe. We said that magnets can stick to metal. Then we investigated by playing with a variety of magnets. We picked our own materials to test in the classroom and in the yard and we had great fun. We learned that the correct words to use for materials that stick or do not stick are attract and repel. During our play we discover that not all metals are magnetic. We checked several things in the classroom as well as different types of coins and they weren't attracted to the magnet. So cool! Finally, we used our magnets to move things without touching them. We designed a game using this concept. We drew underwater scenes, football pitches, mazes and race tracks and used our magnet to move a magnetic character on the top.
